HideDescription
Humans and other species depend on global biodiversity, which is deteriorating at an unprecedented rate. Habitat loss is the greatest cause, and it is imperative that we concentrate our efforts on safeguarding sites critical to the global persistence of biodiversity. This session will launch Key Biodiversity Areas, the 28th edition of the CEMEX Nature and Conservation Book Series, in which leading global experts explore the importance of these sites in addressing the biodiversity crisis. The book’s authors and other experts will highlight the critical role KBAs play in guiding the strategic expansion of protected area networks, implementing and monitoring global biodiversity targets, informing safeguard policies and environmental risk management, and avoiding species extinction. As a blueprint for effectively scaling up action to conserve our planet’s biodiversity, KBAs should be the foundation of ambitious global targets to protect the future of our planet.
