Mr Serge Michel GARCIA

Dr Serge Michel GARCIA is a French biological oceanographer and fishery scientist with a long experience in developing countries and fishery bodies. Former Research Director of the French Institute of Research on Development (IRD) and Director of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Management Division, he retired since March 2007. Since 2008, He is a member of the Board of the European Bureau for Conservation and Development (EBCD) and chairs the Fisheries Expert Group of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (IUCN-CEM-FEG). He authored, co-authored or directed books on fisheries' management (Wiley Blackwell, 2009), MPAs and fisheries (PUP, 2013) and on Governance of marine fisheries and biodiversity conservation (Wiley-Blackwell, 2014) and coordinated scientific developments on the concept of Balanced Harvest. His present focus is the two-ways mainstreaming of biodiversity and fisheries concerns and the interactions between FAO, IUCN, CBD and the United Nations.
