Luis SÁNCHEZ

Professor, University of São Paulo

Luis E. Sánchez is Full Professor at Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he teaches and researches environmental planning and management, with a special interest in environmental and social impact assessment. Trained as a mining engineer and a geographer, he obtained his PhD in Economics of Natural Resources from Mines Paris Tech in 1989. Luis is member of the Rio Doce Panel, a IUCN independent technical and scientific panel to advise on the restoration of ecosystems and livelihoods affected by the failure of the Fundão mine tailings dam in Mariana. His current research activities include the assessment and mitigation of impacts of development projects on biodiversity and ecosystem services and the impacts of mining expansion over important biodiversity areas. He is an active member of the International Association for Impact Assessment and a past President.
