Dr James (Jake) RICE

Chief Scientist - Emeritus, Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Over five decades I have worked to  improve  knowledge of ecosystem dynamics, impacts of human uses of biodiversity, and sustainability of those uses.  Most work was within government, where I increasingly focused on effectiveness of the science - policy interface and integration of knowledge  from multiple disciplines and knowledge systems.   I  participated extensively in expert groups for Intergovernmental Organizations including CBD, FAO, IOC and DOALOS,  I was a lead author for the IPCC Assessment Report 5 and Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere, co-Chair of the IPBES Regional Assessment for the Americas, and Chapter Lead Author for the IPBES Sustainable Use Assessment, co-chapter Lead for the Oceans chapter of UNEP GEO-6, and the Group of Experts for World Ocean Assessment 1 (coordinator of its Biodiversity chapters ).  I  serve as vice-Chair of IUCN/CEM/Fisheries Expert Group .
