Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
I was selected member of the UN Youth Assembly on Environment in 1972. I worked as a Field Director at US Committee for UNICEF and worked as a journalist at UNDP, New York. I was awarded the United Nations Environment Programme Global 500 Roll of Honour at the UN Earth Summit in 1992 in Rio. I was elected as Vice President of the Global 500 Forum. I taught English at Dhaka University, was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Oxford, George Washington University and Harvard University. I was elected to Parliament and served as elected Chairperson of a Parliamentary Committee for Coastal Development and Environment where I presented an integrated coastal zone management policy, which was adopted by the Bangladesh Government. I have also been involved with major national policies relating to environment and water. I was appointed to the Governing Council of the Bangladesh Water Board. I was peer reviewer for IPCC. I advised the Bangladesh Zoo. I campaigned for declaring protected marine areas and Sundarbans as World Heritage Site. I co-chaired the Women for Water Sharing and Peoples Initiative for Water Sharing and presented guidelines for the Ganges Water Treaty (1994). I visited India and Nepal for people’s cooperation for water sharing towards peaceful conflict resolution. I introduced a Resolution for cooperation of all co-riparian countries in the management of common rivers, which was passed at IUCN Congress in Bangkok. I was elected chairperson for two terms at the Bangladesh National Committee of IUCN.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

As IUCN member and last Chair of the Bangladesh National Committee of IUCN, as member of CEESP, and by attending IUCN Congresses, RCFs and other meetings, I have gained considerable knowledge and experience. I would also like to share and contribute to knowledge sharing and give voice to women, youth and people in the populous region of Asia. I would also like to create awareness on UN laws relating to environment. I would like to see implementations of law for the improvement of our environment, improvement of adverse effects of climate change and pollution at mountains, river, sea and ocean as one world.
