World Commission on Environmental Law Climate Justice Moot Court / 6th Oposa Intergenerational Moot Court

Why attend
Conservation conflicts between nation-states may be brought to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This Session highlights the ICJ's role in addressing natural resources, recounting lively moot court arguments presented by law students on the topic of forest conservation, climate mitigation, and the rights of future generations.
HideDescription
The World Commission on Environmental Law Climate Justice Moot Court / 6th Oposa Intergenerational Moot Court was held in December 2020. It tackled a hypothetical problem presented to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), involving a request for an advisory opinion on the obligations of states to protect forests. Selected law students from around the world prepared written submissions in collaboration with World Commission on Environmental Law experts. At the moot court, real judges from the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment played the role of ICJ judges, and the law students presented oral argument to showcase the actual proceeding that would take place in front of the court. At this WCC session, the students will build upon those arguments and further develop their ideas and solutions for the real-world challenges of forest conservation, climate change mitigation, and protecting the rights of future generations.
