Sport and biodiversity: keeping nature in the game

Why attend
This session is designed for delegates interested in engaging with sport federations and sport event organizers to use sport as a vehicle to raise awareness and promote biodiversity conservation. It will explore how sport venues and sporting events can avoid contributing to biodiversity loss and instead support nature restoration.
HideDescription
Everyone in the sport community, from elite athletes to people practicing their favourite sport on a weekend, has an important and vital role to play in protecting our natural spaces and biodiversity. Strengthening the relationship between sport and nature can provide a strong and effective contribution to safeguarding and enhancing our biodiversity. Sport also has a unique global audience, which can raise awareness and facilitate education, reaching millions of people. This session will offer an opportunity to discuss with experts from the International Olympic Committee, Paris 2024 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the San Francisco Estuary Institute and IUCN regarding the relationship sport has with the natural world. It will address how sport can be used to raise awareness on biodiversity and support global environmental issues, and how sport venues can be used as a biodiversity regeneration opportunity, including in urban areas.
