Integration of protected areas on Amazon landscapes as a contribution to global commitments

Why attend
The role of protected areas is well-known. However, In order for conservation to be effective protected areas have to work jointly with actors and sectors that occur in the landscape. During the session the importance of the Amazon biome and the approaches implemented by IAPA will be discussed as well as its contribution to global commitments.
HideDescription
The Amazon biome is the most important terrestrial ecosystem for human survival, containing about 50% of world’s biodiversity, covering 6% of the planet's surface and occupying 40% of the territory in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is home to approximately 34 million people, and about 400 indigenous communities. The eight countries and the territory (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Surinam, Guyana and French Guyana) are working together through the Amazon Vision initiative of REDPARQUES, a regional program that strengthens national protected areas systems through promotion of effective management, governance and biodiversity conservation in a context of global changes. The session will discuss the main challenges and gaps of the region to fulfill the Aichi Target 11 aspects, the contribution of protected areas to SDGs and the challenges and opportunities that protected areas will face on the post 2020 global biodiversity target negotiations.
