Candidate info

Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
I think I fulfil all the qualifications to be a Regional Councillor. I am deeply passionate by conservation and am very supportive of the IUCN mission. The four letters composing IUCN’s name are the main reasons why I am committed to serve the organisation. I have been a Commission member since 1992, member of a national Committee and founder of a member organisation. I also worked for the IUCN Secretariat at regional and global levels and am now a donor. Therefore, I consider that I have a good knowledge of IUCN. With 30 years of rich experience at global, regional and national levels, I think I am a respected professional. I have been involved in several IUCN bodies (SSC Steering Committee, Red List Committee) and other governing or advisory boards. My current position requires frequent interactions and meetings with the Board of my foundation. In all positions, I have been in charge of finances (including at IUCN). I can work in French or English and understand Spanish and Portuguese. Everywhere I worked, I took into account gender equity and regional diversity. I also worked at regional levels where I developed programmes such as regional Red Lists or funding programmes for species conservation. I have worked on numerous areas of interest to IUCN: biodiversity conservation, protected areas, sustainable use (hunting, fishing, logging…), community development, awareness raising and policy. I benefit from institutional support and would serve in my personal capacity.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

Most of my professional experience is closely linked to biodiversity conservation. I joined the Species Survival Commission in 1992 and then joined the SSC Steering Committee and the Red List Committee. Since 2001, I have been heavily involved in the Red List of Threatened Species, IUCN’s flagship product. I established programmes expanding the Red List significantly at global and regional levels, in particular for Europe and the Mediterranean. Today, I support the assessment of the world’s trees for the Red List. I was engaged in a number of other fields of concern to IUCN such as oceans (through marine turtle work), forests (with my current work focusing on tree conservation). Thanks to my training as a veterinarian, I was involved in diseases; a growing threat for animal and plant species. My work at IUCN involved significant policy engagement at global level through multi-lateral agreements but also community development in West Africa or issues related to sustainability with hunting, fishing and logging practices in South America. I was also involved in the establishment or management of protected areas in French Guiana and Guinea-Bissau, which involved engagement with local communities and indigenous peoples. As a donor, with IUCN through the SOS initiative and the Tiger Habitat Conservation Programme, and now with Fondation Franklinia, I have supported the work of a number of conservation organisations, including many IUCN Members.
