Candidate info

Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
I am a biologist, dedicated to nature conservation throughout my entire life. I know IUCN since the seventies. I have worked with many other colleagues, to achieve a greater IUCN presence and activities in my region, and conversely, to increase the presence and visibility of our region's needs and perspectives in the decisions of the Union. I pride myself on knowing the ways of operating, the regulations and even, if I may, “the guts” of the Union. This comes from my many years of active interaction with it, from the opportunity to participate in an external review, as well as from my role as a counsellor for a period of time. I believe I have the skills needed to fulfil my mandate as a regional councillor. I am aware of the needs for continued decision-making, speed and strength on the multiplicity of changes that IUCN requires to regain, maintain and strengthen its position as a leading environmental organization on the planet, thanks to the strength of its foundation: the best available scientific knowledge. IUCN member organizations from Mexico and Central America, meeting at the 2019 Regional Forum in Guatemala, agreed to support my candidature. I have the support of my organization and the time required to fulfil this mandate. Fortunately, I am known and recognized for my constant relationship with IUCN, both in my country and in the region.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

Throughout my years of interaction with IUCN, I have been fortunate to serve in 14 different roles, from the basic pillars of membership and commissions. I proudly participated, together with many Latin American colleagues, in bringing about significant changes in IUCN, such as: • promoting statutory changes to recognize national committees as intermediate structures • establishing the Mexican Committee of members and developing the Mesoamerican Committee as the first regional committee • developing the first Regional Programme in IUCN's history (the Mesoamerican one) • shaping the sustainable use initiative that later evolved into the Sustainable Use and Livelihoods initiative (SULi), the first Specialist Group integrating two Commissions (SSC and CEESP) • working towards converting the Regional Office for Central America into R.O. for Mesoamerica (incorporating Mexico), and later ORMACC to incorporate the Caribbean, regularly "forgotten" until then • promoting reports from councillors to members on Council's performance. • developing the World Conservation Strategy and subsequent materials, as well as the Regional Strategy for Invasive Species Management. I also produced the 2019 Agenda that members received, that shows one of my drawings, “The Region”, reflecting precisely on the elements that unite us, and on the unity in the diversity that we are.
