Candidate info

Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
I am a Venezuelan biologist with graduate studies in ecology and a master’s in public management. This training, along with my work experience, gives me a combination of expertise in conservation and institutional development and impact. I have worked on nature conservation for nine years, and in close connection to IUCN for almost five years; engaging in three different capacities which give me a privileged understanding of IUCN: 1) As Executive Director of Provita (a Member institution) since 2014, representing it in Regional Forums in 2015 and 2019, at the World Conservation Congress in 2016, and engaging in projects with IUCN Commissions and Secretariat; 2) As part of the South American Committee of IUCN Members, especially as Deputy Chair during 2017-2019, coordinating feedback to the draft IUCN Programme 2021-2024 and developing the Regional Programme; 3) As Executive Director of the Chair’s Office of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (based in Provita) since 2017, contributing to strategic planning, monitoring, administration and communications. I would be honoured to bring more gender and age diversity to IUCN Council. I am eager to join the Governance and Constituency Committee, as I believe we can do more to increase Members’ empowerment for the quadrennial Programme development and articulated implementation and evaluation as One Programme. I can communicate fluently in Spanish and English. Both Provita and the SSC Chair’s Office are committed to support me for Council duties.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

Most of my technical experience is in research and recovery of threatened species, restoration of ecosystems, engagement of local communities, and environmental education. I also strongly value my management experiences, especially on strategic planning and monitoring, fundraising, finance and administration, human resources, and internal and external communications. I have multiple positive experiences in group coordination and engagement with different stakeholders, including multidisciplinary and multicultural teams. In these roles, I act by seeking consensus and promoting active and effective participation of all key parties. I bring my perspectives with respect, assertiveness and consideration towards other perspectives, while at the same time adhering to and taking forward group decisions. I take my responsibilities with high commitment and attention to detail, focusing on achieving the best possible outcomes for the organization. Beyond IUCN I have engaged on other international alliances such as RAISG (Amazon Geo-referenced Socio-environmental Information Network) to produce analyses of threats and pressure to the Amazon, contributing to an integral vision of this key ecoregion; and World Land Trust, to share experiences on the management of private protected areas.
