The Ecosystem Services concept and protected area management – from theory to practice

Why attend
This session will discuss how the concept and the assessment of ecosystem services (ES) can be used in protected areas (PA) management. It will identify current practice and future prospects in putting the ES concept into practice within the domain of PA management. Presentations will introduce the topic and highlight recent developments.
HideDescription
In recent years, the ES concept became widely used in nature conservation policies. A common approach is to assess ES benefits in order to raise awareness and stimulate funding for PAs and nature conservation. In addition, the ES concept has been widely proposed for improving PA management. If ES are well considered in PA management, it may contribute to achieving multiple goals. However, so far the ES concept has rarely been used in PA management and consequently, it’s potential benefits have rarely been captured. It will also discuss recent advances in ES data availability, including new global maps of 13 ecosystem services, which might help guide decision making, planning, and management of PAs particularly in data-limited regions.
