Mediterranean climate and environmental change: the scientific world raises the alarm!

Why attend
48% of Mediterranean wetlands were lost between 1970 and 2013, with 36% of wetland-dependent animals threatened by extinction. 20% of exploited Med. marine fish and invertebrates may be extinct by 2050. These are some conclusions of the first-ever scientific report on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean released in 2020 by MedECC
HideDescription
MedECC is an open and independent international scientific expert network acting as a mechanism for decision-makers and the general public on the basis of available scientific information and on-going research. The construction of this network responds to several objectives of regional institutions, such as the UN Environment/MAP through the MSSD 2016-2025 and the Regional Framework for Climate Change Adaptation in the Mediterranean, and the Climate Change Expert Group of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM CCEG). During this event the key results on the impacts of climate and environmental changes on the Mediterranean terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems of the First Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR1) published by the MedECC will be presented. Actions to be taken to increase the socio-ecological resilience will be discussed as well, including adaptation to change, but also regarding additional efforts towards reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
