The Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary: For People, Nature, Energy and Hope

Why attend
MAPS, the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary, declares the Arctic Ocean north of the Arctic Circle an international peace park, free from exploitation of all kinds, in perpetuity. MAPS is a 360º initiative to awaken interconnection globally in order to protect all life.
HideDescription
By scientific estimates, half of the planet must be protected if we are to stop a staggering loss of biodiversity. Loss of Arctic sea ice is altering the habitats, feeding patterns and primary production of ice-associated species. Damage to the Arctic Ocean seabed from commercial fishing trawls, underwater noise pollution from seismic survey for oil and gas exploration, military sonar and deployment of explosives are additional threats to this vulnerable ecosystem. The Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary (MAPS) boldly resolves multiple key and pivotal global issues in a single visionary act of conservation. By establishing the Arctic Ocean north of the Arctic Circle as an international marine protected area free from commercialization and militarization, MAPS safeguards sea ice from pollution and ice break-up, and maintaining peace. It is not an end goal, but a baseline necessity. The Arctic Ocean has always been a natural sanctuary, one our whole world needs now more than ever.
