Prof. Philip MCGOWAN

Professor of Conservation Science and Policy, Newcastle University, UK

Phil has worked for many years in international species conservation, initially carrying out field work on threatened species, particularly Galliformes (pheasants and relatives) in mountains, topical forests and grasslands of Asia, but also Africa and the Americas. He has worked with a large international network of fieldworkers and conservation practitioners and carried out a range of capacity development and conservation planning programmes designed to increase the effectiveness of actions to reduce pressures on threatened Galliformes. He joined Newcastle University (UK) in 2013 and is now engaged in evidence-based species conservation that looks more broadly and systematically at species research to inform policy. Phil is Chair of the IUCN SSC Post 2020 Biodiversity Targets Task Force that has contributed to species aspects of the negotiations on the Global Biodiversity Framework.
