In a region warming 20% faster than the global average, recent assessments proved that Mediterranean biodiversity and economic assets are in crisis and the situation will continue to worsen under business-as-usual. There is an unparalleled opportunity to raise ambition for biodiversity, through a New Deal for Nature and People, by setting an ambitious and transformational Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework. We will suggest solutions for the Mediterranean to achieve the proposed 30% protection target and the session will: ● Discuss scientific scenarios to set adequate spatial management and protection measures, including MPAs and OECMs, towards reaching the proposed CBD 30% protection target within the context of the Mediterranean, elaborating on the ecological and fisheries benefits of MPA and OECM networks; ● Suggest solutions to strengthen synergies and collaboration across different legal frameworks for the establishment of new measures in national and international waters.
