Managers and cultural practitioners will learn about traditional Hawaiian wisdom and knowledge and how they relate to conservation and restoration. The session will introduce concepts of biocultural conservation, and highlight specific projects in Hawaii to show how biocultural approaches offer positive conservation outcomes.

This is the first of a two-part session; Part 2 will occur on Central Stage B at 10:00 on September 5, featuring Michael DeMotta of the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Sabra Kauka, educator and Hawaiian cultural practitioner: Traditional Hawaiian land management practices integrated ecosystem processes and enhanced ecosystem function. This socio-ecological integration is at the heart of biocultural conservation. We will present on the basis for this and how we are engaged in biocultural conservation and restoration in Hawaiʻi today. Outcomes of the session: Audience will learn about traditional Hawaiian land management practices and the cultural and spiritual beliefs that shaped them. We will describe how we are exercising biocultural approaches, working towards maintaining unique native natural resources and describe the efforts involved to restore them.
