Vital Sites for a Protected Planet

The Vital Sites Pavilion highlights how fair and effective protected and conserved areas are a foundation for addressing biodiversity and development challenges, and are essential for human health and well-being. These sites are key to achieving conservation and social outcomes through effective governance and management, achieving vitality for nature and for people.
Protected and conserved areas are the foundation of biodiversity conservation. They safeguard nature and cultural resources, improve livelihoods, and support sustainable development. IUCN works to establish standards and best practices that enhance the effectiveness of protected and conserved areas, and advance justice and equity in conservation, including the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

IUCN's Global Protected and Conserved Areas Programme focuses on three key areas:
1. Achieving quality for successful and valuable protected areas;
2. Enhancing justice for fair and inclusive protected areas;
3. Contributing protected area solutions to the world’s development challenges.
