This session will highlight the issue of human and labor rights violations as well as other crimes that are endemic and ongoing in fisheries, while proposing solutions that can be applied through the combined application of targeted policies and technology. The combination of this policy and technology will lead to greater overall transparency in the supply chain that will not only allow for greater monitoring and enforcement, but will allow the necessary confidence and trust for markets to make informed purchases capable of driving bad actors from the supply chain while rewarding good actors. Additionally, by exploring the potential of these proposed solutions we will catalyse action in support of a "human rights in fisheries" motion for adoption by the IUCN in addition to promoting application of technology across fisheries to address human and labor rights as well as environmental destruction.
