The real environmental impacts of the mining industry: being better informed to better respond

Why attend
This campus will provide attendees with all the necessary knowledge of specific impacts of the mining industry on aquifers, species, forests and more generally, the environment and people to respond with relevance and weight to conservation issues arising from mining - in line with the motion on this matter submitted to IUCN members (motion 067).
HideDescription
The mining industry is currently booming due to a considerable increase in demand for mineral resources worldwide. This campus, delivered by professionals from the mining industry, will provide participants with detailed knowledge on the impacts of mines on terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, which will leave them better able to respond and act on conservation issues arising from theses activities in their country/territory. Participants will learn through interactive exercices about traditional and new mining techniques (tailing dams, leaching, mountaintop removal…) and their detailed impacts, allowing them to understand what can be asked from authorities or the industry to reduce these impacts for improved conservation outcome. They will also hear lessons learned from Amerindian communities in French Guiana, who successfully fought a massive gold mining project threatening their land.
